Technology advances rapidly in these past few years, digitalization had created breakthrough that change how we do our daily activities. In this era of Internet of Things when almost everything is connected via internet, human interaction changed significantly from the traditional interaction where we meet physically, nowadays people can interact with other people without boundary of distance between each individual through cyberspace.

One important thing to note in this era of digitalization is the increasing importance of data. In the past, data were generated through writing or counting process that are done manually, with the increasing usage of internet, data comes in many forms such as images, video, sound recording, and so on. Those data contain important insight that when we are able to manage it, can give us leverage in many aspects, especially business aspect.

Today we heard the term “Big Data” which refers to the unstructured data in the large quantity that cannot be contained within single storage. Big data are generated every second which means its velocity is tremendous. But big data contains important insight that can be extracted. This is where big data analytics come.

The initial stage of data analysis starts from data collection, the collected data can come in the form of recordings or graphs. After the data collection, business intelligence (BI)comes into play because BI enables us to process the data so that it can be delivered and understood by everyone who receive the data. The second stage involves reporting the data to certain people for decision making process. The third stage is the data interpretation which is very important in order to attain insight from the data. Example of this processes is when Gojek connects the driver and customer based on several factors such as closest distance and how the driver is able to complete the customer order.

There are three main roles in Big Data Analytics:

  • Data engineering: Data engineering is how to collect the data and process it so that it can be used for analysis. Data engineering also responsible in storing the data and creating pipeline that connects data sources to the data warehouse
  • Data science: Data science helps to create algorithms that can help to gain insight from the data such as predicting, clustering customer segments, etc.
  • Data analytics: Data analytics requires the ability to manage and analyze data

The difference between big data and traditional data is the fact that big data is big in every aspect, it is big in terms of variety because it can contain different varieties of data types, it is also big in terms of volume that it cannot be contained by a single computer.

The big data when first gathered might seem quite messy, this is why data preparation is important before using big data for analysis.

How can we use big data? Firstly, we start from searching the source of data, there are myriad of data sources, data can come from social media and also from website that contains specific knowledges. After we determine where we want to get the data, we determine which data we should take from the sources, we match it with our need. Next step is to do data cleaning, we need to make sure that our data are clean, each data has the right data types and did not contain any null values, after that we can sample the data.

In this era of rapid technology development, government tries really hard to help the MSME actors so that they can adapt with the changing era by helping the MSME to attain digital transformation. Government hopes that MSME actors can compete in the market with the help of digital transformation although until now there are still some obstacles that are faced by the MSME actors in doing digital transformation.

The recent rise in e-commerce proved to be a good news for the MSME because e-commerce enables MSME actors to promote their business outside the boundary of their home province. Despite the news, according to CNBC that there are only 13% of MSMEs connected to online marketplace. It is quite unfortunate to know that some MSMEs are still struggling in doing digitizing their business, this is why Indonesia is currently working on community adaptation to the 4.0 industrial revolution.
